Gregory Bæticus was born in the Spanish province of Baetica (hence his surname). He supported the Nicene Creed at the Council of Rimini in 359, and was then and later a strong supporter of Roman Catholic Christianity in its battle with the Arian heresy. He was considered the head of the anti-Arian movement in Spain. By 375, he ruled as bishop of Elvira (Illibrius), now in the diocese of Granada.
