The book Of The Bible Numbers
The book of Numbers continues the story of the people of Israel as they journey in the wilderness between Mt. Sinai and the promised land of Canaan. Numbers provides a census of the twelve tribes of Israel as they depart for their journey in the wilderness (ch.1) and at the end of their journey as they anticipate their entry into the promised land (ch.26).
The underlying theme of the narrative is renewed hope in a new generation that is preparing to enter the land of Canaan. The famous priestly blessing from the book of Numbers is read every year during the Feast of the Octave of Christmas, the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God: “The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace” (6.24-26).
