Gethsemane

(The Agony in the Garden)

Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here while l go over there to pray.” He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be filled with anguish and distress. And he said to them, “My heart is filled with grief, even to the point of death. Remain here with me and stay awake." He went a little farther and fell to the ground with his face touching the earth, and prayed, “Father, if it is possible, take this cup away from me. Yet not what l want, but what you want." He went back to his disciples and found them asleep, and he said to Peter, “Could you not stay awake with me for even an hour? Stay awake and pray, so that you may not slip into temptation. The spirit indeed is eager, but the flesh is weak.” He went away a second time and prayed, “Father, if this cup cannot be taken away from me without my drinking it, let your will be done.” When he came back to his disciples, he found them asleep again, for they could not keep their eyes open. He left them again and went to pray the third time, saying the same words. Then he came. back to his disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest! The hour has come when the Son of Man is to be given over into the power of sinners. Get up, let us go. Look, the betrayer is here.”
