Macrina the Elder was born in Neocaesarea in Pontus, Cappadocia (in modern Turkey), probably before 270. She received her religious training from St. Gregory Thaumaturgus, the first bishop of her native town. She married a Christian man. During persecutions she and her husband were forced to live in the Pontus wilderness for several years. Macrina had a great deal of influence upon the religious upbringing of her famous grandchildren.
