Merry’ Christmas

The word ‘merry’ did not originally mean full of cheer, such as less alcohol-induced merriment. It had the less boisterous meaning of blessed, peaceful, and pleasant. Well, a Merry Christmas, then! ‘Merry’ or ‘happy’, what does it matter! It is the wish singling out the day or the season that pleases both man and his Maker. Happy and merry people love receiving and giving presents, they love the holidays, the getting together, displaying their artistic talents and they enjoy a good Christmas spread. And when the feasting and the chattering are all over and the visitors have gone, what is nicer than to relax around the much used and misused television? There we may watch with interest Christmas celebrations, and alas, unreasonable bomb blasts from around the world, causing sadness to creep over us and make us wish that humankind could realize the peace and goodwill that should be engendered by the Christmas message.
