The book Of The Bible 2 Samuel

The second part of the book of Samuel (2 Samuel) does not speak of Samuel, but of David and the stories about his reign as king. This is not a systematic history of events leading up to the establishment of the monarchy, but a narration of stories surrounding the principal figure of the book, namely, King David. First David becomes king of Judah (ch.2), then king of Israel (ch.5), and finally he establishes Jerusalem as the capital of a united kingdom (ch.6).

The Lord’s promise of an eternal dynasty is a key passage in 2 Sam 7 and becomes the basis for the Jewish expectation of a messiah, son of David. Texts from 2 Samuel are read in the liturgy from Saturday of the Second Week of Year II until Wednesday of the Fourth Week of Year II. In these later texts the adultery with Bathsheba, the revolt and death of Absalom, and David’s acknowledgment of his sin before the Lord are all told consecutively in the First Reading each day.
