The book Of The Bible Baruch

The book of Baruch was probably writ ten as late as 200 to 60 BCE. Its context, however, is the Babylonian exile. Baruch seems to be the secretary or scribe of the prophet Jeremiah. The writing is a collection of prayers and hymns that are a reflection upon the circumstances of the exiles in Babylon. Repentance is expected and observance of the law of Moses is presented as the way to life and peace. Jerusalem is represented as the mother of all exiles and is assured that all her children will be restored to her (4.30-5.9).

The passage from Baruch that speaks of walking in the way of God leading to lasting peace is presented as Reading VI at the Easter Vigil every year. In this passage, wisdom is identified with “the book of the commandments of God” that has been given to Israel. This truth leads to the assertion: “Happy are we, O Israel, for we know what is pleasing to God” (3.9-15;3.32-4.4).
