The book Of The Bible Nahum
Nahum prophesied at the time just be fore the fall of Nineveh to the Babylonians, about 612 BCE. Nahum did not know that a few decades later the Babylonians would attack Judah in 587. However, he interprets the fall of Assyria to the vengeance of the Lord God of Israel. For Nahum, Nineveh receives what it deserves, and Judah is spared further threat. The main part of Nahum’s prophecy is a vivid poem (2.3-9; 3.1-3) celebrating Nineveh’s destruction.
A text from Nahum is read at the liturgy on Friday of the Eighteenth Week of Year Il (1.15-16; 2.2; 3.1-3, 6-7). In this passage, Nineveh receives divine punishment for its crimes against neighboring peoples. The obvious parallel lesson in the NT is that everyone will be repaid according to what each has done when the Son of Man comes in the last days (Mt 16.27).
