I have not Forgotten our promise

From the very beginning, the girl’s family objected strongly her dating this guy, saying that it has got to do with family background, and that the girl will have to suffer for the rest of her life if she were to be with him. Due to family pressure, the couple quarrelled very often. Though the girl loved the boy deeply, she always asked him: “How deep is your love for me?” Language problems on the boy’s part caused the girl to be very upset with his responses. To aggravate the situation, her family’s attitude made the girl often give vent to her anger on him. As for him, he endured it all in silence. After a couple of years, the guy graduated and decided to continue his studies overseas. Before leaving, he proposed to the girl: “l’m not very good with words. But all l know is that I love you. If you allow me, I will take care of you for the rest of my life. As for your family, l’ll try my best to talk them round. Will you marry me?” The girl agreed, and with the guy’s determination the family finally gave in and agreed to let them get married. So before he left, they got engaged. The girl got employed in a company while the guy was abroad, pursuing his studies. They exchanged their love through e-mails and phone calls. Though the separation was hard, neither ever thought of giving up on the other.

One day, while the girl was on her way to work, she was knocked down by a car whose driver had lost control. When she regained consciousness she saw her parents beside her bed. She realized that she was badly injured. Seeing her mum cry, she wanted to comfort her but could not  all that could come out of her mouth was just a sigh. She had lost her voice. According to the doctors the impact of the injury on her brain had caused her to lose her voice. Llpon learning this she broke down. Even after reaching home she was far from being cheerful. Everything seemed to be the same, except for the ringing tone of the phone that pierced her heart every time it rang. She did not wish to let her fiance know about it. Further, not wanting to be a burden to him, she wrote him a letter saying that she did not wish to wait any longer. ln return, the boy sent countless e-mail messages and made innumerable phone calls. All that the poor girl could do was weep. The girl gradually learnt the ‘sign language’ of the hearing handicapped and started life anew, telling herself everyday, that she must forget the guy.

One day, she got the news that her friend was back. But she took all the necessary steps to avoid meeting him. Since then, there wasn’t anymore news of him. A year passed by and one day she got an envelope, containing a wedding invitation card sent by the boy. The girl was shattered! But imagine her great surprise when she opened the envelope! What did she see but her name as the bride! And as she stood therebaffled, who did she behold standing in front of her but the boy she had tried her level best to avoid! Amazingly, he used the sign language to tell her, “l’ve spent a year to learn the ‘sign language’, just to let you know that l’ve not forgotten our promise! Let me have the chance to be your voice. l love you so!” With that, he slipped the ring he had brought onto her finger. The girl burst into tears of joy.
