Our Lady of Sorrows As on the Friday in Passion Week, so again in mid-September, Holy Church especially commemorates Our Lady’s great sorrows. The seven principal ones were: the prophecy of the aged Simeon in the Temple, the 300 mile flight into Egypt with the Infant, the loss of Jesus in Jerusalem when he was a boy of 12, Mary’s encounter with her Divine Son on his way to Calvary, his crucifixion, the taking down of his body from the Cross and his burial. Today’s feast was first granted to the Servites in 1668, and when Pope Pius VII came out of exile in 1814, he extended it to the Universal Church in gratitude.
