The book Of The Bible Joshua
Whether one considers the book of Joshua as the sixth part of a Hexateuch (a col lection of six books) that completes the story line of the patriarchal promises or sees it as the beginning of the story of the conquest of the promised land, it is the continuation of the history of God’s people under the leadership of Joshua, the successor of Moses. The book shows God’s fidelity in giving the Israelites the land promised in the book of Genesis (15.18ff.) To take possession of the land, the Israelites have to enter into a long period of invasion and conquest, but one that is destined to be successful to the extent that God’s people remain faithful as enjoined by the perspective of Deuteronomy.
Passages from Joshua are read during the liturgy in Year I of the weekday calendar from Thursday through Saturday of the Nineteenth Week of the Year. In these pas sages the crossing of the Jordan into the promised land (3.7-10, 11, 13-17) and the renewal of the covenant at Shechem (24.1-29) are read.
