The book Of The Bible 1 Kings

First and Second Kings were originally one book in Hebrew, similar to 1 and 2 Samuel. 1 Kings continues the narrative by treating the events of the succession of Solomon to the throne of David. The subsequent building of the temple, stories about the reign of Solomon itself, and the subsequent division of the kingdom after Solomon’s death are told with the characteristic Deuteronomistic point of view. The kingdom of Israel in the north and the kingdom of Judah in the south were governed by a series of successive kings.

The Is raelite kings are presented as wicked and eventually lead to the demise of the Northern Kingdom. The kings of Judah are not judged as harshly and continue a little longer the Davidic dynasty. The final chapters of I Kings treat the works of the prophets, particularly Elijah and his confrontation with Jezebel, the wife of King Ahab. The narrative of 1 Kings is presented in the liturgy during Year II of the weekday liturgical calendar. The passages are read consecutively on Thursday of the Fourth Week of the Year through Tuesday of the Eleventh Week of the Year. Selected passages are also read on certain Sundays with in the liturgical cycle.
