The book Of The Bible Tobit
The book of Tobit is more closely related To Jewish wisdom literature than to the historical narrative of the OT. It probably was written in the early second century BCE. its story line, however, is set in the context of eighth-century Nineveh, where Tobit lived among the captives brought there after the fall of the Northern Kingdom, Israel, In 721 BCE. The narrative depicts the intertwined stories of Tobit and a far-off maiden named Sarah.
The main plot is dedicated to Tobit’s son, Tobias, who is sent by his father to collect a sum of money that Tobit had deposited some time previously in the far-off land of Media, where Sarah also happened to live. The angel Rafael accom panies Tobias and enables good fortune and blessing to come upon the main char acters of the story. The book of Tobit underscores the value of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. It is recognized for its teaching on the intercession of angels, filial piety, and reverence for the dead. Passages from Tobit are read on Monday through Saturday of the Ninth Week of Year I in the weekday liturgical calendar. Moreover, passages from Tobit are also offered as choices for readings during the celebration of marriage.
