The book Of The Bible Judith
Written sometime at the end of the second century or the beginning of the first century BCE, the book of Judith is a dramatic short story about how God intervened on behalf of his people through the heroism of a pious widow named Judith. The story tells about how the commander of the armies of Nebuchadnezzar, Holofernes, is defeated by Judith’s faith and re sourcefulness. This story is inspired by the exodus narrative and was written as a reflection on the meaning of Passover. It teaches how God is committed to the survival of Israel in the midst of the great adversarial powers of the day.
A passage from Judith is provided in the Common of Saints describing her faith and beauty even as she mourned the death of her husband, Manasseh (8.2-8). Also, a passage from Judith is offered in the RomanMissal for the Common of the Blessed Virgin Mary as a Responsorial (13.18, 19, 20). It is the blessing of Uzziah upon Judith for her saving deed.
